Why We Designed a Silicone Cat Collar (Instead of PVC)
Why We Designed a Silicone Cat Collar (Instead of PVC)
When we at MontereyxJack decided to create a waterproof cat collar, we knew one thing immediately:
We weren’t going to use stiff PVC.
PVC collars are common in the pet industry. They’re inexpensive to manufacture, easy to clean, and widely available. But after testing them ourselves, we weren’t convinced they were the best option for everyday wear — especially for cats.
Here’s why we chose premium silicone instead.
The Problem With Traditional PVC Collars
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is durable and water-resistant. But for cats, it has a few drawbacks:
- It can feel stiff and plasticky
- It doesn’t flex naturally with movement
- It may become rigid in colder temperatures
- Lower-quality versions can crack over time
For dogs, that stiffness might not be noticeable. For cats — who jump, twist, groom constantly, and sleep in tight curls — flexibility matters more.
We wanted something softer.
Why Silicone Is Different
Silicone is flexible, smooth, and lightweight. It bends naturally with your cat’s movements rather than resisting them.
Here’s what makes it a better fit for everyday feline wear:
1. Flexible & Comfortable
Silicone moves with your cat instead of sitting rigidly around their neck. That flexibility reduces pressure points and makes the collar easier to forget they’re wearing.
2. Waterproof (Without Feeling Plastic)
Silicone repels water but feels smooth and soft to the touch. It doesn’t have that shiny, stiff finish common in PVC collars.
3. Odour-Resistant
Silicone doesn’t absorb moisture or hold onto smells the way fabric collars can. That makes it ideal for cats who are messy eaters, enthusiastic explorers, or frequent groomers.
4. Easy to Clean
A quick wipe with warm water is usually all it takes.
Safety Still Comes First
Material choice is important — but safety is always the priority.
Our silicone cat collars are designed with a breakaway safety clasp. If the collar catches on furniture, a fence, or anything else, it releases under pressure.
Waterproof doesn’t mean rigid. Durable doesn’t mean heavy. And no collar should ever sacrifice safety.
Who Is a Silicone Collar Best For?
A silicone cat collar is ideal for:
- Cats who are hard on fabric collars
- Multi-pet households
- Cats who occasionally explore outdoors
- Owners who want something low-maintenance
It’s also a great second collar option — something practical you can rotate in when needed.
Why We Didn’t Cut Corners
PVC would have been cheaper. It would have been easier.
But we’re building a brand that prioritizes how things feel, not just how they look or photograph.
Cats are sensitive. They notice weight. They notice stiffness. They notice texture.
If we’re asking them to wear something every day, it should be thoughtfully designed.
Our Take
We designed our Soft-Flex Waterproof Cat Collar (Coming soon - March 2026) with premium silicone because we wanted something that felt better — not just something that checked the “waterproof” box.
Flexible. Lightweight. Easy to clean. And always breakaway.
Because practical should still feel considered.
